[London, UK] — [July 2025] - Last month Mike Harvey, Director of On-systems embarked on a gruelling trek to Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps, as part of his preparation for the Polar Marathon in 2026. The journey proved to be the toughest physical and mental test of his life, offering a stark reminder of the risks and rewards of extreme adventure.

The climb began with three days of acclimatisation at 3,400m on Glacier Triente, where Mike and his team practised with crampons and ice axes. During the traverse, Mike and his guide encountered a whiteout on the Glacier Triente, leaving them disoriented and at risk. After navigating a treacherous ridge to return to the French side, Mike realised the dangers were far greater than he'd anticipated.

However, the real challenge came as they descended to 1,100m for a night in a hotel before the summit attempt. On summit day, Mike faced freezing temperatures, altitude sickness and a severe head cold, which compounded the physical strain.

A Life-Threatening Decision

During the ascent, to 3,800m Mike's breathing was laboured, and he realised he may have to make a choice not to summit. However, at 4.20am on final summit day, Mike chose to set off for the peak, with his friend and a guide. However, after a further 400m climbed, he made the difficult choice to turn back. "Summitting was optional, but getting down alive wasn't," he said.

Despite not reaching the peak, Mike's expedition has kicked off a gruelling training plan ahead of his once in a lifetime marathon at the North Pole in 2026. "This trip was the first step in a journey that's about more than personal achievement," he added. Mike hopes to raise £250,000 for a cause close to his heart - Garden House Hospice. The local charity has supported Mike, his colleagues and friends through challenging times and Mike's fundraising efforts so far have already generated £25,000 in donations.

A Message of Gratitude

Mike thanked his supporters, saying, "I can only do this because of the love and commitment from each of you." His story underscores the importance of perseverance, preparedness and the power of community.
